<< I opened with a statement on my philosophy
of being a lactation consultant: to help a mom meet HER personal
breastfeeding goals, whether it be for a week, a month, or a year, not to
impose my values on her >>

i have a problem with the idea that presenting breastfeeding for a year is a
"personal value" to be "imposed" on a client. i certainly encourage clients
to breastfeed for at least one year, and it isn't a reflection of personal
values, it is a medical recommendation. so is my recommendation supporting
co-sleeping, as are my recommendations supporting attachment parenting. i
make evidence-based recommendations to my clients. the data supports making
these recommendations. in the same way, i assume most ob/gyns would recommend
that their patients not smoke during pregnancy, most internists would
recommend treating high blood pressure, and so forth.

i do not view myself as a fanatic. i find this remark gives me the impression
that the speaker is apologizing for something, or disassociating herself from
something. or do we get to pick and choose which concepts we support and
which ones we do not, based on personal feelings?
