"I think I just have too much imagination, but this made me giggle. I right
away imagened all kinds off stuff babies of say 3-4 months old reach at when
it caches their attention. Should they eat that all ? The dogs' tail, the
candle-flame, the bunch of keys on a ring, their own toes or other
extremities... :o))"

Yes, when my mother-in-law would say, "look, he wants, he wants" in
reference to the food she was coaxing him to take, (raw green beens, danish,
carrot, half a grape, spoon full of mush), I would tell her that if she
offered him a rock he would take it and stick it in his mouth. (She was
mashing macaroni and cheese for him at 3 months!) Mouthing
things is one of the ways babies explore their world. Reaching for the food
is one of the ways in which babies show their readiness, but watch the
child for other signs, as he may just be working on his eye, hand, mouth
co-ordination.
