Jaye describes a case in which she used the scale to determine how closely
the baby's intake matched expected need for volume, in response to Nina's
question on what we do with the info about how much a baby has taken at a
given feed.

I read the description, and after I cleared up my own confusion about the
2.5 times the baby's weight being a guide for how much food they need, I am
still a little confused about the rest. (For other metric unit users, two
and a half is the factor you multiply the baby's weight IN OUNCES by, to
estimate how many OUNCES of milk the baby needs in a day. This is what
happens when you use base 16 measuring units. We metric types estimate it
at 150 ml per kilo body weight per day and I want to emphasize ESTIMATE.)

In the presentation of the case, I want to hear what lies behind the words
"baby...exhibits inconsistent abilities to get a full feeding." *When* was
the baby an eight pound baby? At birth, or now? And if it is now, at one
week of age, was the birth weight higher or lower than eight pounds? In
other words, has this baby lost an inordinate amount of weight in the first
week of life? Is baby continuing to lose weight, or holding steady, or
gaining? For surely we can't diagnose insufficiency of suckling without
knowing the baby's weight gain over time? And Jaye, I am asking this
because I know you are no fool, you must have some observations that made
you suspect something was amiss. What are they?

On the information given in the post I don't see the problem. I see two
feeds of varying amounts, and a baby who doesn't complain. I need to know
the naked weight at birth and at every juncture thereafter when anyone
weighed it. If the mother does pre and post feed weights scrupulously over
24 hours and shows that baby is only taking 35 ml each time, but the baby
grows, what is the trouble? Likewise if the baby takes 75 ml per feed and
wants to feed 12 times every day - will we try to convince this baby that
s/he has gotten plenty already?
