I couldn't agree more with Marsha Glass. I experienced pain, bewilderment (why
wasn't this working like it was supposed to?) and almost panic using traditional
Lamaze back in '74 with my first baby. Fortunately, it was a home birth so I
persevered and had an almost perfect birth.

With my 2nd baby, I paid attention to my body instead of trying to block it out.
This time the pain was incidental to all the other interesting things I noticed
for the first time. I could feel the baby's head moving down after particularly
hard contractions, I could feel her push her feet against my fundus, I could feel
a full body shudder right after her head emerged (cold air?).

Come to think of it, why would you want to "tune out" such a wonderful experience?
