My almost 19 month old granddaughter dropped her doll yesterday and quickly picked her up and told me that "dolly wants nana". She nursed her standing and her dolly felt much better immediately. I of course was 'schlepping nachas' which freely translated from Yiddish would be 'carrying joy, pride'. Most often she just quietly nurses her dolls and animals while playing with them.
Since Mika 'yoneket' (breastfeeds, feminine, Heb.) we do not know why she calls her breastfeeding nana and I was amused that babies from other countries also say nana. Prehaps here it came from 'Eema' - which is mommy in Hebrew. Warmly, Toby Gish RN, IBCLC (Haifa, Israel) who finds it hard not to say nursing when I mean breastfeed.

In Hebrew the words for breastfeeding and baby come from the same root -
which is also the root for mammal. A mammal is a 'yonek', a baby is a
'tinok' and what the baby does on the breast is 'linok' - or in present
tense, single, male form, 'yonek.' The mother breastfeeding is the same
root but in the verb form of doing something to someone. The language
makes it vey clear what babies should be doing.
All the best,
Chayn in Israel
