Dr. Wight,

When you were in Atlanta last year for the Emory breastfeeding conference,
you talked about your experience with preemies in your NICU that are doing
so well on mothers or donated breast milk. I had asked you how you got the
insurance companies to pay for the donor milk. You had said that you'd be
happy to send me a copy of the letter that you send to the insurance
companies to persuade them to pay. I didn't persue it at that time because
I don't see babies in NICU, I'm a general pediatrician.

I recently found out about a baby who was born at 26 weeks, mom is still
carrying the twin now at 32 weeks. She is not able to provide breastmilk
until she delivers the 2nd twin. They have been using donor breastmilk for
the milk bank in NC and paying out of pocket for it. The baby is thriving.
The neonatologist has suggested switching to the other stuff but mom has
insisted on giving the baby breastmilk.

Could you please e-mail me a copy of the letter? I will forward it to the
mom.

Maybe Dr. Tieman could use that letter to advocate breastmilk for her
patient.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Vaishali

PS: Please send it directly to my e-mail
