I've been noticing that the babies I counsel that get vanilla pacifiers tend
to have problems with latching. These are babies that have not received a
bottle but seem to not be interested in finding the nipple or just not
latching correctly. This vanilla pacifier thing is fairly new here and it
has been the only time that I have been seeing this problem when I cannot
find any other reason for the infant's trouble. Such as been getting
bottles, birth trauma, etc.
I am wondering if having the strong artificial smell of these pacifiers up
next to the infant's nose is causing the infant not to later be able to
smell the natural and more subtle smell of their mother's nipple? Whatta
think? Has anyone else found a correlation in their clients with the use of
vanilla scented pacifiers?
