Had an interesting experience today. A mom came in for an
outpatient visit. I have had a couple phone conversations with her
and she has attended our group where a couple of the other LCs
worked with her. Early on I wondered if she might be one of those
rare insufficient mammary tissue moms. I had suggested More MIlk +
and mentioned that if that didn't make a difference, there were a
couple meds that some docs are willing to prescribe. Her OB has
been one who mostly gives lip service to breastfeeding and has
expressed some opinion that we really don't know what we're talking
about. Much to my surprise, when updating this mom's history, she
told me she she had mentioned her concern to her OB and the doc
prescribed Reglan and gave her the protocol for its use! One reason
I suggested the MM+ first was that I didn't think this doc would
even consider Reglan or Domperidone. Goes to show you we mustn't
make assumptions. Now that I know this doc is more open than she
had seemed to be, I'll pass along info on domperidone. Don't know
if she will consider it, but at least I know she isn't likely to
"slam the door" on the idea without at least looking at the info.
She did mention to this mom that if she noticed she was getting at
all depressed she should stop taking the Reglan so that would give
me an opening for info on Domperidone as one without that concern.
Time will tell, but it is good to know that docs can and sometimes
do change for the better!

Winnie
