Rachel, it does seem like such a no-brainer, doesn't it? - to supplement
this baby with Vitamin D. I find it hard to believe that I'm even getting
the full story as to the doctor's issue with her breastfeeding. That's one
reason I wanted more information on nursing with this condition. I wanted
to be sure there wasn't something else to be concerned about, other than the
baby's Vitamin D status. So, after emailing Lactnet yesterday, I made
another call to the nurse who asked me for help on this case (the nurse is
her Lamaze instructor). According to her, concern has also been voiced for
the client's calcium status if she nurses the baby. But I still keep coming
back to the notion that if she could sustain a pregnancy, then she should be
able to breastfeed. The client is already taking calcium and other
supplements. It would seem to me that all she needs is to continue to take,
while nursing, whatever vitamin or mineral supplements she has been taking
during pregnancy. See her doctor. And supplement the baby's vitamin D.

But I was hoping someone else had dealt with this before, so that I had
something more solid than my own common sense to rely on <g>. ::sigh::
I'll say this - this business is a lot of things, but it is NEVER boring!

In the post about this a doctor was quoted as saying the mother with this
condition would not be passing any Vit. D to the baby by BF. The
implication seemed to be that it would not be worth it to BF in the absence
of Vit. D transmission.
But, this is pretty much true for anyone who breastfeeds. Even
supplementation of mothers doesn't appreciably change the low level of Vit.
D in breastmilk. There isn't supposed to be much of it there.
