Brenda: Actually, you may want to rethink your decision not to attend
formula comapny presentations. It pays to know what the "enemy" is doing.
Of course, you do not have to accept the "free gifts" or food. I did
attend this presentation at my hospital which was scheduled for our monthly
pediatric department meeting (which only doctors and nurse managers usually
attend) a few months ago and it was actually quite enlightening. I was
most bothered by the fact (the talk was given by an area hospital's
director of neonatalogy) that the speaker mentioned the honorarium he was
being paid in every other sentence. I did challenge him on a couple of
points which he graciously listened to. When he discussed his practice, he
did make the point that it is routine for the neos to "insist" that every
mother of every NICU baby at least pump for their baby as he feels very
strongly that mom's milk is a medicine.
To comment on the "breast or nipple (take your pick) Nazi", our entire
staff was informed at a staff meeting a few months ago that anyone heard
uttering those words to anyone or about anyone would be written up for
inappropriate behavior. Doews anyone know how this phrase even got started?
