Hi there,

I have looked at the archives and noted the reasons for treating fresh
breastmilk for those preemies under 1500 gm - because of the possible
transmission of CMV (lots of good info about this). So, my question
really, is what institutions are doing specifically? Do most places
freeze ALL milk for very small preemies or are some NICU's testing
mothers and/or milk and freezing only those who are positive for CMV? I
would like to know if the second option is feasible - looks like
currently in this area, all extremely low birth weight babies do not
receive any fresh colostrum or milk due to the risk. Is this generally
what other communities are doing? I have been out of the NICU for some
time and practice changes quickly (although much of the time - not
quickly enough).

Thanks in advance,

Pam Rardon RN, IBCLC
