This is how we treat fortified human milk in our Neonatal Unit.
When fortifier is added to human milk it must be treated like powdered infant formula and the aim is for it to only be used for that feed. Ususally fortifier however has to be added to a set amount 20 or 50 mls. There is often some left over as NICU babies feeds are calculated very accurately to the nearest mililitre. If there is some fortified breastmilk left over it can be kept until the next feed in the fridge as long as it is not heated. We would mix it in a seperate sterile container, mark it as fortified with a date and time. The reamaining expressed breastmilk should be used at the next feed. When i first started in NICU 17 years ago we did used to make up large amounts of it to last the shift but thankfully that has now changed.
