I find this discussion of pumps, pumping necessity, and ethics in
advertising of strong interest to me. I especially liked Rachel's post about
advertising and agree with her reactions to the photos used; sometimes they make my
skin crawl. We all know many a mother who pumps out of necessity and would
give anything to be able to nurse her baby (my daughter being one of these; she
pumped for almost two years). Marsha's post addressed this fact.

Out of my frustration about the misinformation that abounds regarding
purchasing a pump prenatally, the need for others to just *have* to give a bottle
to otherwise normal breastfeeding babies, and also the struggles of moms whose
pumping yields would improve with the right pump, correctly fitting flanges,
solid information on the *how to* of pumping, I recently completed an
article on pumping. I hoped to dispel the myth that all moms need to have a pump
by addressing when a pump may be needed, mentioned manual expression as a
viable means of milk expression, and included the how-to's and circumstances that
call for milk expression. Writing with a specific publication in mind, I
referenced my material. It was not accepted.

My article sits waiting on my computer because I feel ethically in the
dilemma of where to submit it so it doesn't end up next to a formula ad or a
come-on pump ad. How does one reach the mothers, mothers-to-be who could benefit
from information without compromising ones ethics as an LC by submitting to
a mainstream publication? I'm frustrated and would appreciate input. I'd
like to think what I've written could reach a wider audience than the few moms
who attend my prenatal breastfeeding classes.
