I have been counseling breastfeeding mothers in one form or another for the last 17 years, and I know very well how things can get misinterpreted by parents. Frequently they hear what they want to hear and what fits with what they want to do. I'm not being critical, we all do this at times. I'm not saying that the LC's at the hospital didn't say or do what the parents said, but based on my experience, I would call them (one professional to another) and touch base with them about their "plan" before jumping to the conclusions based on what the parents have told you. There may be reasons that you are not privy to.

I use this technique frequently with physicians and other health professionals. It not only clarifies things but you can use it as a way to educate them as well. e.g. I'm following this mother and baby and was calling to get your input on some things that the parents told me. Sometimes you find that you indeed did not get the whole story, and even if you did, it opens up the way for dialogue.
