Ann,

This is the reference for the CDC publication which states that Universal
Precautions do NOT apply to human breastmilk unless it contains visable
blood:

Centers for Disease Control: Update: Universal precautions for the
prevention of transmission of human deficiency virus, Hepatitis B virus, and
other bloodborne pathogens in health-care settings, MMWR 37:378-87,1988.

You also may find the article in Pediatrics, Nov. 1995, p. 977-78 to be
useful in writing guidelines.

I spent some library time today looking for research on HIV and
breastfeeding. The information is for presentation at a Community
Breastfeeding Coalition meeting about HIV and Breastfeeding. This is in
response to a Health District employee who feels that adolescents should not
be encouraged to breastfeed unless they are also tested for HIV.

Becky
