You're so right-
I spend more time asking questions when moms call to try to find out "what's the
problem". Usually they call to buy a pump - but they need a baby at the breast,
not a pump. (These are not hospitalized babies, of course).
I am trying to change "culture" - we all are, I guess. And now that those darn
books are telling moms to put babies on "schedules" again we're going to have to
write our own books (yes, I like the idea of "250 dopey barriers to
breastfeeding.")

MOMS AND BABIES NEED TO BE TOGETHER (yes, I'm shouting) - what's this idea of
putting a baby in another bed in another room? When I need to get to know
someone I need them right there to learn about them! (the Honeymoon, for
example)

A baby doesn't know they're "supposed" to be independent. They just know that
they were once warm, snug, massaged, rocked, talked to, etc - and now all of a
sudden they're all alone, cold, dry, hard, untouched (the over-wrapping we have
here even reduces the skin contact with babies when they're being breast-fed - I
have to "unwrap the package" before I can help with breastfeeding as moms don't
want to unwrap this perfect package the nurses bring them.)

I tell moms if God intended for babies to be left alone in a crib He would have
us lay eggs instead of developing our babies in our bodies!

My mom remembers sitting next to my crib, watching the clock and listening to me
cry while she cried and waited for the "right time according to Dr. Spock" to
pick me up! Do we really think that's the way it's supposed to be????

I know - I'm preaching to the choir - but it is so frustrating some times.

my mom), IBCLC, RN
