Hello Lactnetters
I posted once before requesting help for a mother moving to Kentucky and
appreciate the response I recieved. My name is Ellen and I work in a
hospital that does anywhere from 2-3000 deliveries a year. There are 2
of us LCs who work full time and we were using 2 prn's to help fill in
on days off and vacations. Our manager would like to start offering
outpatient services along with what we already do, seeing all
breastfeeding moms, taking phone calls and making followup calls, and
seeing any moms elsewhere in the hospital who needs help. Here is our
dilemma . She wants to do all this with just myself and the other
fulltime LC. We will no longer be allowed to use our prn people. We
have no support staff on the floor to speak of even though 4 nurses went
through the weeklong CLC course. We haven't been able to orient them to
cover and we aren't sure if we will be able to. The nurses are supposed
to help mothers who are not having problems but they get so busy
sometimes they don't have the time. My question to those of you who
practice in a hospital is 1 How many deliveries do you do a year and how
many FTE LCs do you have? 2 What other services do you offer : ie.
outpatient, followup calls , support groups etc.? 3 Do you charge for
your services and do you have a hard time getting them reimbursed
through insurance? 4 Do you cover weekends and holidays? 5 What kind
of support staff do you have on the floor? 6 What happens when you are
ill or take a day off?
You can e-mail the answers privately or to the list if you wish. My

Thank you
Ellen Bouillon RN IBCLC
