Hi Everyone,

There is discussion in our hospital on how to facilitate keeping mothers
and babies together after a c-section. I am hoping that all of you who
work in hospitals that do this will respond.

I'd like to know how it is done and ways staffing requirements are met in
the recovery room. Currently, babies go to the nursery for care while the
mother goes to recovery. We have tried getting the nurses to bring the
baby back to recovery within the first hour for breastfeeding, but have
been minimally successful.

Our L&D manager reports the barriers to be: one on one staffing
requirement for recovery room. "High" potential for bleeding in the first
15 minutes in recovery. She feels mom's nurse can't deal with baby too if
mother is bleeding heavily.

If nursery RN stays in recovery with the baby, this can create a problem in
the nursery with less staff to watch any other babies who may be there.

Personally, I think mother-baby nursing would resolve these issues, but I'm
told "baby steps." So, we continue to try and give better care within our
old framework. I think it would be easier to make the big change than to
try and solve problems we create by not keeping mothers and babies together
in the first place.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.
Billie Frye
