I have a major problem with the way breastfeeding - a normal, natural
process is 'medicalised'.
Surely what should be driving our practice is what we see works. I
couldn't count the number of times I've seen it written that the reason
breastfeeding has so many problems is because our young girls aren't seeing
it happen everyday, like they used to - learning by seeing what works.
That can equally apply to us as breastfeeding health professionals - we
learn our practice by doing, seeing, listening. What we do and see and
know works is what should drive our research - not the other way
around: ie we don't have research to prove this yet so you can't do
it! It should be 'this works well (or causes problems, or whatever), let's
find out why'. I'm a very firm believer in evidence-based practice, but if
you don't have the evidence for something then you can't just automatically
preclude it from your practice or we'd never learn or try anything new.
