Thanks to everyone for all the replies to my rant.

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about this mom. I'm not
quite sure what it is about this situation that is pushing my buttons.

Several of you mentioned PPD and I wanted you all to know we did talk
about PPD, and I emphasized to her I was concerned and I didn't want
her to think her "crying all day" was due to the stress of the
breastfeeding when it is really PPD. I asked her about support and if
she felt safe and I will follow up with her tomorrow.

I still feel her and her husband's expectations of being parents
are unrealistic and that is a major motivator in the thinking they
should just bag the breastfeeding. I was struck by her commenting
how great it was in the first week when she was just pumping and
botlefeeding that they went out with friends and her husband's lack
of support to even do that because then she would be "tied to that".
She's complaining about how this baby is affecting them socially and
the baby is only 4 weeks old!

To those of you who mentioned support groups, that is actually how we
got her in for a consult - she came to our weekly breastfeeding
group. On that note - I started this group about 1 1/2 years ago and
we did it 2x/month. It quickly became wildly popular. A private LC in
the community did a weekly group that she had to put on hiatus back
in May due to illness, so I asked my director if we could increase
our group to weekly - thinking maybe the numbers would be more
manageable (we could get 15-20 moms). It had just the opposite
effect. I think, more moms than ever are coming. I am thrilled, but
I wonder what moms did before we had it. I'm so glad we are there for
them, it's one of the things I've done as coordinator for our program
that I am really proud of. The other is recently getting rid of the
formula bags! WooHoo!

Thanks again for everyones responses.
