While reading references, I came upon this:

"Initiation and maintenance of lactation represents the neonate's
successful control over its environment. Frequent and vigorous feedings
result in a continuous supply of nutrient-rich, osmotocally correct, and
immunologically protective food. The latational infertility that
accompanies breastfeeding reduces the infant's competition for maternal
resources. The endocrinology of lactation reflects the infant's integral
role in its own survival."

Faber KA, Hammond CB, Endocrine Aspects of Breast Disease and Breast
Function, Pathology of Breast Disease, ed. by Isaacs JH, Mosby Year Book,
St. Louis, 1992, p. 91.

Just had to share!
