I've spent the whole night thinking about this dilemma. Do we refuse to
speak and state why or do we speak, refuse any money, gifts, food, etc?

I'm sure that if one refuses to speak because of formula co. sponsorship,
the message will never be heard by the audience. They will assume you
backed out for unknown reasons, or maybe they will come up with their own
reasons (e.g., not dependable, personal problem, etc.).

If you speak and ask that a disclaimer be added to the program with
regards to the sponsorship, that disclaimer will never be seen.

However, if you speak and present the disclaimer yourself...that might
actually be heard. You could always type up the disclaimer and have it
printed on poster board. Most copy places will do this and it's pretty
cheap. Begin the presentation by stating that you have not taken any
monies, gifts, food, etc. and state why. Show the BIG poster. Then
begin your presentation.

We need to be more vocal about this issue. The Philadelphia Inquirer had
a huge article in Sunday's Magazine section on the pharmaceutical
industry buying off doctors in exchange for prescribing their meds.

Just a thought.
