I remember hearing about it and on a side note my husband and I were born
in the same hospital a couple of months apart in 1965 and my mother-in-law
was commenting on the common newborn procedure then. Both she & my
father-in-law worked at the hospital at the time, that all newborns had a
stomach lavage (I guess that's the right term, sterile water put into our
stomach then suctioned out) to make sure we 'had no mucous' before we could
eat the first time or 'the baby will get sick'.

She blamed this procedure on my husband's throat issues - he had a
stricture for years that was finally diagnosed as EEC(?) can't remember the
whole long allergy name for it now.
