The ADA position statement on the promotion of breastfeeding is at
http://www.eatright.org/adap0697.html My interpretation about weaning
by 12 months is a bit different than Kimme's; perhaps because the
language is fuzzy. The ADA refers to the "importance of sustained
exclusive breastfeeding for 4 to 6 months and, optimally, breast-feeding
with weaning foods for at least 12 months." I read that as breastfeeding
for AT LEAST 12 months along with 'weaning' foods. Now, I don't know
what 'weaning' foods are but Webster's definition of 'wean' is "to
accustom (as a child) to take food otherwise than by nursing." Since we
do feed children in addition to breastfeeding by this time, the ADA
statement appears to me to promote breastfeeding beyond one year.
