Dear Lactnetters,
The last posting that I could find on this subject in the archives was done
in Dec. 1998. At our local hospital it is still the protocol to do gastric
lavage on a newborn baby that is nauseous and spitting up. Is this still an
universal trend? Isn't this a potential interference with the baby's
suckling ability because "The mouth is the cockpit of his awareness and of
his most discriminate responses" pg. 107 from "Breastfeeding and Human
Lactation", Jan Riordan and Kathleen G. Auerbach. What about the effect of
the parasympathetic stimulation of the vagus nerve when a tube is being
passed down a baby's throat that can lead to bradycardia and an increase in
gastric hydrochloric acid, is this acceptable? Is this still a therapeutic
necessary procedure and if not and what is the alternative? I would
appreciate some opinions and discussions.
Love the little babies,
Maureen Barnard. RN. George, South Africa.
(just had the results on the web that I passed the IBLCE, YEHHH.., but wait
for the official documents before I can write IBCLC after my name.)
