Today had a referral from local MD regarding 4 month old with daily
bloody stools, otherwise thriving child, exclusively breastfed. Mom was
seeking second opinion after being told to stop breastfeeding by baby's
pedi. Stool cultures and labs all negative. This is a growing, pink,
chubby child who is quite happy-- with loving parents. He is otherwise
free of symptoms. Mom's expressed milk is free of blood. She has
stopped all dairy 2 -3 weeks ago. She rarely eats beef, takes no
medications, has no unusual eating behaviors, appears quite healthy and
well-nourished herself. She did mention, however that this stooling
problem became evident shortly after her baby was given the rotavirus
vaccine at 2 months of age. That was a red flag for me, so I contacted
Oregon Health Division who is doing some research for me. I know the
vaccine has been pulled from the market, and that there are some
possible connections between the vaccine's use and intussusception in
infants. He is not vomiting, however and did not seem uncomfortable or
distended. I, of course encouraged her to continue breastfeeding, and
am doing my best to communicate my concerns as well as dig for info.
Any other ideas out there? Thanks in advance.
