Dear Folks:
This is in response to the post about the woman suffering: "burning
upon urination and I thought it might be a bladder infection. My doctor
said there was no infection; I was just experiencing early lactational
atrophy due to lower levels of estrogen. Not only does this atrophy account
for decreased
lubrication, it also makes the tissue of the vulva more irritable, and, my
clitoris has almost disappeared."
Was there any postpartum hemorrhage? I have worked with several women
where this has been an initial complaint. The OB-GYN was quick to attach the
discomfort to breastfeeding. But these women had other symptoms: hair loss,
insomnia, low energy and other signs of endodrine malfunction. Symptoms can
develop over a period of years after the birth. The symptoms are not huge or
drastic, and are attributed to sub-clinical Sheehan's syndrome. A doctor
trained in Chinese medicine, or an endocrinologist is worth a visit: a
practitioner who will look at the whole woman, and not just her genitals. It
is worth checking out. Warmly, Nikki Lee
