I once worked as a postpartum nurse in an inner-city hospital here in San
Francisco.  It was a common experience to walk into the room of one of our
African-American teen moms and find the young mother sucking on a pacifier.  They
usually seemed unconcerned about being seen doing this.  I often wondered about the
combination of unfulfilled needs that led them to be pacifier-sucking mothers at the
age of 15 or 16.
