I have forwarded a lactnet post from Anna Swisher which refers to PPD and
essential fatty acids, as well as a Medscape article in which there is a
bibliography containing an article re natural hormone replacement for PPD.
Personally, I have had good results for postmenopausal depression with
natural hormone therapy, prescribed by an MD who uses alternative medicine,
and who also has prescribed essential fatty acids, a type called Kirunal.
If this mom is possibly perimenopausal, or just having hormone imbalances,
there are certainly ways to test levels. I have been given 10 mg daily of
DHEA for libido also. It bears looking into, although certainly there may
be relationship issues as well.
Good luck, thanks for caring for this mom.

Subject: Postpartum lack of sexual interest

My client breastfed the baby for 6 mo. Her husband took off several weeks,
and then she was home with the baby (after having had a 20 year working
career). She is very involved with the baby, and he works from 5am til 7pm
(including the commute). The baby is now 18 mo, and the couple is thinking
of separating. The reason: She is not interested in affection from the
husband or in giving affection to him. They are living "like roommates".
Does anyone have any information about PPDepression/lack of
interest/hormones that might explain this change in her feelings since the
baby came. A book I could recommend for them? They are in counseling,
but still feel like they are heading for separation. M. Scott, MA, RD,
IBCLC in NH
