Formula companies do NOT pay anything at all toward our training, materials,
or instructors fees. We nurses are paid by the hospital (our regular hourly
wage) whenever we come in to do any continuing education (whether we are
taking the chapter tests or doing the required practical). Our instructors are
two of our own nursing staff and they are paid by the hospital as well. We pay
for all of our own materials.

I would certainly agree that the increased use of obstetrical interventions (not
to mention the increase in pre-term births, inductions, etc.,) has increased
the potential for the need for resuscitation, but thankfully, a full blown
resuscitation on a healthy newborn is a rarity.

But we still have to have the skill and most labor/delivery units require their
RN's to be certified in NRP or we cannot work in the unit. NRP is no different
than other critical care areas requiring their nurses to have PALS (Pediatric
Advanced Life Support) or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). All nurses
have to ahve the basic BCLS (better known as CPR).

Also, the American Heart Association is the body responsible for the setting of
standards. Mead Johnson has nothing at all to do with that.

Is knowing that Mead Johnson might be sponsoring my NRP book going tomake
me more supportiove of formula? I think not. Personally, I ahve a lot better
things to do with my time thabn worryong about looking for a logo on things.

I like Marsha's idea about looking at the items on the Ban The Bag site.
