Breastfeeding moms seek to break world record

http://news.inq7.net/breaking/index.php?index=2&story_id=74543

THOUSANDS of nursing mothers will attempt to break the Guinness World Record on simultaneous breastfeeding in Manila on Thursday "to stress the importance of the practice and bring the people's attention to its benefits."

Manila Mayor Lito Atienza said 5,000 mothers will gather at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate this morning to break the present record.

"This project is aimed at instilling the importance of breastfeeding as well as its health benefits," Atienza said in a statement.

The City of Berkeley Women Infants Children Program in California holds the current world record for the most number of mothers who participated in simultaneous breastfeeding, Atienza said. The organization attracted 1,130 breastfeeding mothers on August 3, 2002 to participate in the record-breaking event.

"Simultaneous breastfeeding started out as a protest that mothers resort to when they are told not to breastfeed in public," Atienza explained.
