As physicians, we try to keep up with as much as we can, but for a VERY long 
time, artificial feeding was the standard of care, and not thought to be 
important.  Some of us physicians are working as hard as we can to educate our 
peers.  We all have our areas of strength and weakness regarding information (I 
have to look up milrinone drip doses EVERY time - but I know how much protein 
and how many calories my 500 gm premie needs!).

I tried very hard today to convince the mother of a 678 gm growth-restricted 
28 week infant to give me her milk or use donor milk.  She refused because she 
said that she had researched silicone implants and they were not safe for 
breastfeeding (and milk banks do not ask donor mothers whether they have implants 
- because it doesn't matter!).  I showed her the research, but she chose to 
believe what she believed.  

Doctors are no different than patients and everyone else - we all have our 
beliefs that cannot be shaken by "facts".  Some of us will just have to die out.
