Had a mom tell me the other day while sharing her labor and delivery
experience, that she had planned on having an epidural, but labored at
home too long and when she came in she was told it was too late and she
had the baby soon after without the epidural. I asked her how she felt
now about the experience less than 24 hours post-partum and she replied,
"It was hard, but believe it or not I actually felt empowered". I
smiled. I also asked her if anyone prenatally discussed this possible
feeling were she to opt to not have the epidural while discussing the
pros and cons of epidurals and she replied that she was actually told
she would feel more comfortable and therefor more "in control" and
stronger when the time came to push with the epidural. Hmmm.........She
then preceded to tell me she would do it the same next time around.
Hmmm...
