Dennis Spangler, a pediatric allergist, spoke at a recent ILCA conference.
What I remember his saying---and it's a memory, so I may have the numbers
wrong---was for a mom in a family that already has allergic children, the
best protection against allergy in subsequent children was for the mother to
avoid:
dairy products, through the pregnancy and for the first 12 months
eggs, through the pregnancy and for 18 months
and peanut products, through the pregnancy and until age two.
And of course, exclusive breastfeeding and non-rushed, careful introduction
of other foods to the baby.

On the other hand, I recently listened to a tape from this summer's LLLI
Physician's Seminar, in which a doctor described a study that found that
breastfed babies ended up with MORE allergies than babies fed a
hypoallergenic, elemental formula. Can anyone who was there make a comment?
I will listen to the tape again to get the details, but that's going to take
me awhile.

All I know is that if I were having another baby (unlikely at 57!!!), I'd
stay off dairy products for sure. I pigged out on milk during both
pregnancies and during both lactations---and probably was already sensitized
myself, having been a bottle baby. Both of my kids were healthy for the
first year but both got their first ear infection at 13 months, just after
being introduced to cows' milk. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Peace. Chris.
