Just a couple thoughts I haven't seen mentioned on this subject.

Breastfeeding doesn't need to be done EITHER before OR after
solids.  In some cases it may help to nurse long inough to "take the
edge off" baby's hunger, then play and offer solids, nursing again
afterwards if the child is still interested.  For some it appears
that the hungrier they are the less willing to try something less
familiar or less liked.  If you nurse to satiation, then there isn't
"room" for the solids.

Another approach would be to not wait for the child to indicate
hunger.  If awake between nursings, offering solids before the child
asks to nurse may be more successful.
