Diane,
In regards to your question re using SNS tubing without cleansing, if it's
going to be used again within a few hours, I don't see any problem with this.
In the NICU we leave small diameter naso gastric tubes in place for up to a
week at a time (depending on the material the tubing is made of) and feed
expressed breast milk or formula through these, usually every two to three
hours. We don't clean the tubing because, of course, it remains in the
baby...so residual milk stays in the tubing. We also sometimes feed premies
by continuous infusion of milk. The infusion tubing is changed every 8 hours.
I think it would even be ok, if mom sets up the SNS with clean technique, to
leave it taped to the breast with left over milk in the reservoir and feed
the baby again within the next 3-4 hours. I base this on the same principle
that we allow human milk or formula, fed continuously via NG tube, to remain
in the reservoir (syringe) for 4 hours. After 4 hours I would advise
cleaning the whole set up really well.

And welcome back to LACTNET.
