Wow -- what an undertaking. Hope you get to publish whatever you
write in the pop literature, heaven knows, lay people need access to
 this information.

I'm assuming you have read Milk, Money & Madness by Baumslag; there
should be a bibliography w/ tons of references for you. Ditto for
Gabrielle Palmer's Politics of Breastfeeding. Her book is referenced
throughout the text and should send you right to the sources.

Anything by Kathy Dettwyler (spelling?); she's an anthropologist,
out of Texas A&M

Have you talked to anyone at the national La Leche League office?
Seems like they would have some good information as to why the
organization was founded, and digging into their archives might
reveal some of the history of the development of formula and our
 bottle-happy culture.

When you finish your research, post a note on LACTNET so that we can
contact you to find out where to get a copy. Also, I'm sure many
folks would be willing to proof, offer suggestions, be on your
 mentoring team, etc.

Good luck, and keep in touch,
