I had a frustrating experience recently trying to make the point
about not accepting advertising. It was at a Practice Improvement
Committee meeting. The subject of lanyards to hold the nurses'
nametags came up. One person suggested getting some from one of the
drug companies. Another spoke up tongue in cheek and said "Let's
get some that say 'Miller High Life' (for those non-US people,
that's a popular brand of beer)". The director chuckled and said
that of course, that would be inappropriate. I than asked (pointing
out in advance that I was dead serious) "Why would that be less
objectionable than advertising for a drug company?" I wasn't taken
seriously, so I repeated the question a couple more times. Rather
than anyone seriously considering the implications, it was scoffed
at and we went on to other subjects. Of course I was thinking in
the back of my mind that if they could agree that maybe advertising
for drug companies might not be appropriate then I would be able to
make a point about free formula samples. Oh well, I will continue
to be somewhat of a thorn in peoples sides about this. I'm trying
to strike a balance between making a point and being obnoxious, but
it isn't always easy!!!
