Fellow Lactnetters,

I'm on contract with my local hospital and was asked by the OB nurses on my
last referral to talk with another mother on the unit.  I was told she was
complaining of extremely sensitive nipples during any stimulation
(breastfeeding, cold winds and whatever) and also complained of high
sensitiviy in her umbilicus.  This was the mom's second baby, well infant,
24 hrs. old, latched on well, sucking well, nipples erect, no trauma noted.
Mom describes him as " a very aggressive sucker".   Mom also tried to
breastfeed first infant, only made it to 3rd breastfeeding and quit due to
extreme pain/sensitivity in nipples.  She said it feels like someone is
digging their finger nails into my nipples.

This is a new one on me!  Any idea what could be causing this high
sensitivity?  Is the sensitivity in the umbilicus related to the nipple line?
Any chance this mom could breastfeed ?  Any suggestions are appreciated.

An old dog (well, not so old or a dog) CAN learn new tricks!  I can't wait
