Hi. My name is Renee Tavares and I'm a fairly new subscriber. I am
really enjoying and appreciating all of your wonderful sharing of
information. It can be a breastfeeding- hostile world out there and
reading Lactnet is like getting a shot of positive energy to keep on
mothering the mothers who need support. I'm currently working at a new
job, after 6 years in WIC, in a large county medical center in San Jose.
I'm employed as a Perinatal R.D. working with primarily high risk
prenatal women. I'm also a C.L.E. and am awaiting the IBCLE exam results
in October. Enough about me...
Today I got a call from the neonatal NICU Social Worker who asked
me if it was ok for a mother who is infected with Multi-resitant Staph.
Aureus to be providing pumped milk for her infant who is also in NICU.
Infant was born at 35 weeks, is 11 days old, weighed 8#1oz. at birth and
is just now finishing a course of antibiotics. Both mother and infant
have been in isolation and mother is a quadriplegic. Apparently mom is
pumping amd dumping for now, but getting discouraged. Since I have not
spoken with mother or even looked at Medical Records's yet this all I
know.
BOTTOM LINE IS: CAN MOM GIVE INFANT HER MILK? My guess is that it is
probably ok, especially since both mother and infant are treated. Does
anyone have experience with this or know of studies? You can e-mail me
privately. Thank you so much.
