I was summarily dismayed to read Esther Grunis' latch-on rates from her
hospital. Am I to understand that 40% do not latch at all upon discharge?
This is surely a reflection of how far we have gone away from "normal birth"
in our culture. One wonders what mothers and babies would have done 1,000
years ago if their latch-on rates were similar. Indeed, what would the human
race have done with such a rate? Would we even be here today? Or would we
have all died out by now? Why, oh why, oh WHY can't the birthing world see
that SOMETHING is amiss if this is what we have to show for a
birth/breastfeeding experience in our culture?
