I have a client right now who has given me permission to post to lactnet to
see if anyone out there has had any experience with one-sided engorgement.
This mom has an abundant supply. Baby is 6 weeks old and has gained 4 lbs.
She has been staying on same side for 4 hours and recently increased it to 6
hours and is drinking mint tea and using cabbage leaves in efforts to reduce
her supply. I should also mention that she has had several plugged ducts and
two bouts of mastitis mostly in the right breast. She is also currently
treating for thrush. We have dealt with the mastits and thrush which by
themsselves would do in many women. But this mom is most frustrated by the
engorgment The problem is worse at night as the right side fills up very
quickly. She has it timed now so that she is nursing on the right side at
night, but she still can't keep the engorgment in check and it is painful
and keeping her awake. She is computer savy and recently read somewhere
that one-sided engorgement could be a sign of breast cancer. HAS anyone
heard this? - I haven't. Also, any additional suggestions?. This is her
second child and she didn't have these problems before, although she always
had plenty of milk. Her doctor wants to put her on birth control pills at
her next check-up and although I had prevously advised against them I'm
wondering if they might actually help.
