Jonathan, I read the excerpt from Tom Hale's book Medications in Mothers'
Milk re: Phenergan. It states the following:
"Generic=Promethazine
Category = Phenothiazine used as antihistamine
Phenothiazines pass into breastmilk in low to mod livels. Infants appear
hypersensitive to this class of compounds and may exhibit jerking
(extrapyramidal) symptoms, although they have not been reported. Long term
follow up (6 years) has found no untoward effects on development. Observe
infant for sedation, jerking symptoms.
AHL= 12.7 hours
PK= 2.7 PB= 76-80%
Nowhere is it stated that a side effect of this drug is sudden infant death
syndrome. My edition is 1995 Fourth Edition. I do not recognize the source
you have quoted, but I am concerned that this reference to SIDS is made. Is
it substantiated by any studies?
