Dear Jay and Tammie,

Bloody stools are most frequently a sign of perferated bowel, if it is
red in the stool, usually in the rectum or the end of the colon.
Usually a protein malabsorption problem. Mom's diet can help releive
the problem. If colic becomes a major problem, that's usually a
carbohydrate problem--sugar or fiber. Mother can take a calcium and
iron supplement to help maintain her physical stores. If she needs a
broader diet, expressing with the limited diet and dump with the wider
variety. Doing a diet analysis (from a 3-day diet record) would be
helpful to the Mothers to let them know they are getting good nutrition,
even if it is limited. Check this website for an analysis database:
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/ it's free

Eat seasonally available foods from local markets. Could exposure to
other alergens be a problem? Dust mites, tree and grass pollin? Many
infants have a VERY sensitive gut. Ruling out a fissure would be very
beneficial--usually with a lower GI, or endoscopy. Make sure it is a
Pediatric GI specialist that comes highly recommended. I have had
horror stories from some parents.

Breast is best!!! I have had to recommend Neocate to my
non-breastfeeding mothers. I'm in the South--notorius for conservative,
anti-breastfeeding propaganda.
