I am wondering whether it has to do with oversupply being very common or
whether it is just "because"...

My first daughter wanted to nurse about every 20 minutes until we
finally got the milk production down quite a bit, when she eventually
spaced it out quite a lot more than that (maybe every 4-6 hours during
the day, though she still nursed a lot at night).

I am noticing that my second daughter, though she nursed frequently with
the colostrum, no longer does so (milk came in ± 36 hours after the
birth). She can easily go 3-4 hours between feeds (though often when
she wakes, she will nurse 2-3-5 ;-) times in an hour or 2-hour period
before going back to sleep for another few hours). With all the talk of
how humans should nurse several times an hour, I am thinking this
doesn't seem "normal" and yet I can't help but wonder if oversupply has
something to do with it, because although the MER seems fairly powerful,
I don't think I'm suffering from quite as much milk for her because she
ONLY nurses off one side, so she ends up getting to the fattier hindmilk
whereas my first daughter never did when I was changing sides very
often...so I figured she got hungrier faster especially having not
swallowed as much since she came off much faster (Nyssa will stay on for
a good 1/2 hour sometimes).

It just all makes me wonder what exactly is behind our nursing so
frequently in a traditional perspective...

get up at night, in snowy Québec!)
