Hi,

This might be one of your more unusual tongue tie stories.
My son Daniel is now 13 years old. He was born with a tongue tie. At that
time I was advised that snipping the tongue tie 'was no longer done". I had
breastfed one baby already. I tandem fed Zac (then 2 yrs - Zac and Dan were
born two years apart to the day - gave birth to Daniel in time to share
birthday cake for afternoon tea) Daniel was born 7lb 14oz. He seemed to
attach and breastfeed well - but breasfed all the time. The deal was,
Daniel could feed from both breasts, but Zac only got one breast. Daniel
never gained more than 100g per week, but was healthy. He grew down to the
third percentile where he pretty much still remains. In his first year he
also developed asthma. I don't know to what extent if any the tongue tie
was implicated in his slow growth - there are a lot of factors, but he was
the slowest grower of my 3 biological children - though all were born
relatively big and crossed the percentiles downwards in the first year.
Anyway, in July this year we finally had the tongue tie cut. He said he had
a "bum tongue" (the heart shaped cleft at the end.) and asked for it to be
snipped. He still couldn't, at 13, extend his tongue past his lower gum. I
took him to the GP whose nickname in town is "Dr Snip" A little topical
anaesthetic and in about 30 seconds his tongue was released. It just about
lept out of his mouth and could wriggle everywhere. Didn't hurt a bit. (He
said) Daniel's speech had never suffered. The only benefit I've really
noticed is that he can now rudely poke out his tongue at his mother. He is
a big mouth breather and a snorer. If I had known how easy it would be I
would probably, on balance, have got it snipped earlier - I wonder if it
would have made a difference

Warm Regards
Barb
