HI All,
Haven't responded to this thread, 'cause it had seemed a bit above my head,
but then I had a thought:
Has there ever been a before and after test weigh when mom was just BF, no
SNS?
If there was a suck prob going on, you know, the type that looks good from
the outside, but in reality ain't so great, then you could find this out by
doing the test weigh. This way you can find out what baby is taking just
from the breast, and maybe do this a couple of times, and get an idea of how
much this kid can take from the breast.
I agree that this moms supply is most likely compromised, which means that
she either needs to keep supplementing until her supply can bebuilt vack up,
either by baby (after it has been determined that he is for sure taking
aenough from the breast), or by pumping. I remember an earlier post saying
that mom said she didn't have the time to pump so returned hers. This mom,
if she so badly wants to BF, needs to buckle down and do what she's gotta do
to succeed. I know, from personal experience, how difficult it is to pump,
and take care of a baby and feed and all that. But sometimes we have to work
extra hard to reach our goals. If her hubby is a supportive type of guy,
which it sounds like he is, then he should be encouraged to do everything he
can to enable her to do the pumping she needs to do.
I also agree with the person who said drop the supplement SLOWLY. If I
remember correctly, she went from 6oz of supplement to 3oz, not enough weight
gain, then back to 6 oz. If the supplement was reduced by 1/4 oz per day, it
would not be such a shock to baby's system, he might be a bit hungrier, which
would make him work a bit harder and build up moms supply. This is a
strategy we have used here with some of our moms whose babies will go to
breast (they are given before and after test weigh to make sure they are
definitely doing what they need to do at breast, along with the suck exam,
etc.) but moms supply is low. This seems to work very well. Slow and
gentle.
Good luck! Hope this mom hangs in there. This is a stressful time for her
and hubby.
Take care!
