I received a call from a mother whose 14-month-old has Sensory Integration
Disorder. This child also had a liver tumor as an infant which required
treatment with steriods. She has serious oral aversion issues and is
currently working with an OT to sort out food issues (she gags when given
any solids).

The baby is primarially breastfed. Mother feeds baby on demand. The OT has
requested that the mother eliminate comfort nursing and put the baby on a
feeding schedule. The mother is not comfortable with this plan and feels
that the OT does not understand the nurturing aspects of breastfeeding.
The mother has spoken with an excellent IBCLC in our are who agrees with
her about continuing to breastfeed on cue, whether for nitrition or
comfort. Unfortunately, neither the IBCLC or I have anything concrete to
offer her related to this specific situation.

The mother is in need of information she can bring to the OT related to
breastfeeding and children with Sensory Integration Disorder. Her hope is
that by approaching the OT with a journal article, abstract, or the like,
they will be able to work out a different treatment plan that respects her
daughter's need to nurse.

Does anyone on the board have experience with this disorder or know of any
written info the mother can share with the OT? She is considering
switching to another OT, but is concerned that the issue will come up
again. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
