Rachel writes, inter alia:

<< Things that often DO hurt the further course of BF are:
forcing the breast into baby's mouth (incorrect latch, pain, soreness for
mother, and aversion for baby) >>

Sing it, sister. Is anybody reading lactnet who is an LC in New York City
at either Mount Sinai or Lenox Hill Hospitals? If you are, I would love to
talk to you about what gives there (privately, I guess).

These are two high end maternity places in NY, both with quite high epidural
rates (when I delivered my first child at Mt Sinai 7 years ago they told me
it was above 85%, don't know if that's still true) and I see a lot of mothers
in my neighborhood who have delivered at them, who present to me at say 10
days pp, with this story:

"In the hospital the LC got her to latch great, and she had a long feeding,
but now I can't get her to open her mouth and my nipples are kind of bleeding
and my [lc, ped, mil, etc] suggested I give her formula every other feeding
for some relief so I'm still doing that and I guess its working but my
nipples are still bleeding and I'm still giving formula [or: pumping] and I
guess bf is just really hard and painful but the bottle is a big help..."

Aaaargh. (NB: I of course don't know exactly what the LCs are saying or
doing there, and am not jumping to conclusions about exactly what it is; but
I do know that it does tend to generate this story, so even if it is terrific
on its face, there is clearly some problem with it...)

So yeah, please, better to wait a few hours and give the moms some confidence
and the babes some time.

A lot of hospital based LCs have posted here in the last few days that they
are more hands on that they might be *because they only have 24 hours* or so.
But last night a couple of you posted that you can afford to wait *because
after all you have 24 hours* and this seems to me so much more effective as a
way to actually deal with the dyads. Please, please...

who happily just heard from the first one of these moms I ever helped,
several years ago, who was halfway to permanent bottle feeding of her first
baby at that time but is now cheerfully nursing her 2-year-old second child
-- yay!
