I, too, had fussy, colicky first and fourth babies. These are some
suggestions:

- I usually reassure moms that it is unlikely that colic is related to
anything they are or are not doing. For many babies, it seems to be
related to a developmental phase and will generally start clearing up by
3 months or so as baby's system matures. If dietary stuff is aggravating
the condition, changes with elimination of the offending substance is
pretty quickly seen in my experience.

- I have had some good success with homeopathic colic tablets. They can
be purchased at most drug stores or health food stores.

- It may be worthwhile to get a chiropractic adjustment or two for the
baby. I have occasionally had moms who saw dramatic changes with this,
and many chiropractors will treat babies free of charge (at least in our
area)!

- Encourage mom to use the time of day when baby is least fussy to do
essential tasks such as prepare dinner in advance, or whatever, and to
not plan to do anything during the times when baby is most fussy. At
least this cuts down on some aggravation.

- Encourage mom to take advantage of any supports available to help with
meals temporarily, housecleaning, walk the baby, whatever will help.

- If at all possible, get mom connected with a breastfeeding support
group. Just talking with other moms with babes of similar ages, or who
have gone thru a similar experience, may be greatly reassuring and very
much worth the effort for her.

Hope something here helps.
